Even though fall has just begun, it won’t be long before mountains around the world see an abundance of fresh powder. Planning a ski vacation early in the season can be a great idea for many reasons. Airfare and resorts can be cheaper, and lift lines will certainly be shorter in the weeks before the holiday crowds show up.

If you’re planning on a ski holiday early in December, consider one of the following locations.

Tignes, France

The lifts of the resorts at Tignes, which link to the world-famous Espace Killy ski area, open in late November, giving you access to nearly 190 miles of pistes. With some runs beginning above 11,000 feet, you can be assured of good snowfall even early in the season. But there’s a lot more to do than just ski. Tignes is packed with bars, restaurants, clubs, spas, and shopping opportunities for round-the-clock fun.

Breckenridge, Colorado

The highest ski resort in the United States is a prime location for early season runs. 86 miles of pistes plus two bowls ensure that even powder-hounds will find early-season enjoyment here. Of course Breckenridge is known for its outstanding hospitality. More than 140 bars and restaurants can cater to every taste, and there are museums and other attractions to enjoy as well.

Saas Fee, Switzerland

With elevations ranging from 6,000 to 12,000 feet, you can expect reliable early season snowfall at Saas Fee, and more than 60 miles of groomed pistes. More adventurous skiers can find off-piste opportunities as well. The resort caters to those who enjoy a traditional alpine feel, just with a bit more luxury. The gorgeous chalets and resort buildings are festively decorated leading up to Christmas, and gourmet dining options with fantastic scenery are available to enjoy it all.

Cortina, Italy

If you crave the traditional European ski experience, Cortina is for you. Think of relaxing bars, horse-drawn carriages, and quaint market stalls all overlooked by the commanding Dolomites. Of course the skiing is out of this world. Take the lift up to nearly 10,000 feet and carve your way across endless pistes. Cap off your day in a warm mountain hut while enjoying a delicious espresso or cocktail for the perfect experience.

Vail, Colorado

Located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains near other resorts including Northstar and Heavenly, Vail boasts 145 miles of ski runs, plus a single pass that allows you to ski all three resorts. Of course Vail is also famous for its shopping. Families will enjoy their time here as well, with a huge ice skating rink, numerous restaurants, and a variety of different accommodation options to suit different tastes and budgets.

Insurance Tips for Ski Vacations

Finding the perfect place for your next ski vacation is only the first step of planning your trip. You also need to shop for the right insurance to keep you covered when you go.

If you’re traveling internationally to a location outside the USA, shop for travel medical insurance. This insurance is designed to cover you for any eligible new injuries or illnesses you may suffer while traveling outside your home country. Many plans can also cover pricey emergency medical evacuation if necessary.

Those traveling from another country to the US should shop for visitors medical insurance. A visitors insurance plan can help protect you against any new illness or injury that occurs outside your home country after the effective date of the policy, shielding you from the high cost of American healthcare. Many plans participate in PPO networks, so you can take advantage of network-negotiated rates and direct billing.

American residents taking a ski vacation abroad or domestically can consider travel insurance. It primarily offers trip cancellation protection, but can also cover emergency medical care, travel delays, trip interruption, and more.

Hazardous Sports Coverage May Be Necessary

Depending on the nature of your trip, standard travel insurance plans may not be sufficient. Not all plans cover every activity. Make sure you examine your plan before purchasing to ensure that it can cover skiing as a permitted activity. If not, look into hazardous sports travel insurance

Please keep in mind that some insurance plans may have altitude restrictions, wherein they will not provide coverage for medical conditions that occur above a certain altitude. Make sure to review the policy certificate for any insurance plan prior to purchasing so you know for sure that it can provide coverage for your situation.
